Introduction to Force Plates and Performance Testing

This course is an introduction to force plates and performance testing. This course covers the basics of setup and calibration of force plates, and then walks through several fundamental performance tests including squat jumps, countermovement jumps, drop jumps and loaded jumps. Two versions of the isometric mid-thigh pull as well as an isometric squat are also covered in the course. Real-time data collection from the software is also shown as the athletes are performing the tests. A module on data analysis rounds out the course, which includes five metrics collected from the force plate, as well as calculations from this data, including relative strength index - modified, and dynamic strength index. A quiz for 0.5 CEUs will be available in April 2023.

  • Intro to Force Plates - Course Intro

    This course is an introduction to force plates and performance testing. Fundamental jump tests, including the squat jump, drop jumps and loaded jumps are discussed, and two isometric tests are also included to show the basics of utilizing a force plate and the metrics collected from these tests.

    The second module of the course covers the basics of setting up the testing area, leveling the force plates, zeroing the force plates, and preparing to test your athletes.

    The third module of the course shows the VALD software and what to expect with the different testing protocols described.

    The fourth module of the course walks through the testing protocol of the squat jump, the countermovement jump without arm swing, and an Abalakov test.

    The fifth module of the course describes the progressive testing protocol for the drop jump, and also shows real-time data collection from the force plates.

    The seventh module in the course covers two variations of the isometric mid-thigh pull, as well as an isometric squat hold. Real-time data collection is also shown.

  • Intro to Force Plates - Data Analysis

    The eighth module of the course analyses the data collected from all the tests performed. Several metrics are discussed in detail, including flight time from impulse-momentum, relative strength index - modified, relative strength index, dynamic strength index and more.

    The ninth and final module of the course provides a quick recap of all the tests and major discussion points covered throughout the course.
